Parenting Programmes

Topic(s): Children & Families

MSF has appointed ten Parenting Support Providers (PSPs) to deliver parenting support services on a regional basis. PSPs work closely with schools and community partners in their allocated regions to support parents through evidence-based parenting programmes and referrals to services depending on parents’ needs.

The PSPs offer two evidence-based programmes – Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) and Signposts. To sign up, parents may contact the PSPs serving their child’s school or their region or approach the child’s school Teacher-In-Charge of Parenting Programmes.

Programme Overviews

The Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) is an evidence-based programme that equips parents with techniques to promote their children’s (aged up to 16 years) psychological, social and emotional competence. Triple P is built on a tiered system that provides different degrees of parental support.

MSF’s evaluation studies found that the evidence-based Positive Parenting Programme (also known as Triple P), has positive effects on parenting and child outcomes in Singapore.

About 85% of parents endorsed the programme as being relevant to their parenting needs. Parents with secondary school-going children showed a sustained 31% reduction in their emotional distress scores, and a 22% reduction in their child’s problematic behavioural scores. Parents with primary school-going children sustained a 15% improvement in their parenting satisfaction and efficacy scores, and an 18 % reduction in their child’s problematic behavioural scores.

Parents have online access to the programme for 12 months. Triple P Online provides parents with a toolbox of strategies that help them to encourage positive behaviour and to prevent and manage misbehaviour.

Through this interactive course, parents can learn at their own time and pacing, and pick up simple and practical strategies to confidently manage children’s behaviour. The course consists of videos, exercises, tips and activities, suitable for parents of children and teens.

Signposts is an evidence-based programme that equips parents with skills to help them understand, prevent and manage their child’s difficult behaviour through the development of a personalised programme that suits the unique needs of their child. Parents are also taught to develop strategies to prevent and manage difficult behaviour.

It consists of 5 weekly group sessions x 2.5-hours/session.

Developed jointly by the Ministry of Social and Family Development and the Parenting Research Centre from Australia, the Purposeful Play programme seeks to help parents of children aged 0-6 years develop their child through play and daily interactive activities.

The Purposeful Play programme introduces you to 10 evidence-based strategies that equip you with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Think about ways to create a warm and stimulating home environment for your child
  • Use everyday activities to develop language and problem-solving skills to enhance your child's school readiness, as well as to bond and strengthen your relationship with your child.

You'll gain confidence in your skills to support your child's development and build supportive relationships with other parents.
