Celebrating the Work of Licensed Solemnisers in Nurturing Strong Marriages

Topic(s): Children & Families, Marriage Journey

MSF Helps Licensed Solemnisers to Better Support Marriages

1 Licensed solemnisers have been instrumental in supporting couples since 1961 and are valued partners of the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF). Apart from solemnising marriages, many solemnisers play an important role as "marriage advisors". For example, licensed solemnisers commonly provide marriage preparation advice and information before marriage as well as marriage support when couples face challenges and life changes after marriage. In their interactions with couples and the community, licensed solemnisers may even play the role of "marriage ambassadors", inspiring the younger generation to consider marriage.

2 MSF is supporting licensed solemnisers to play these roles more effectively in the following ways

• Solemnisers can help strengthen marriages by advising couples to go for Marriage Preparation Programmes and Workshops supported by MSF; and

• MSF will be offering the Marital First Responder Training for licensed solemnisers to pick up skills on how to provide basic marriage advice and help to couples. This is especially relevant for religious organisations, as they are typically natural touchpoints that couples turn to for help when they face marital issues

Golden Jubilee Wedding Celebrations 2020 - Registration Now Open

3 The Registry of Marriages (ROM) and Registry of Muslim Marriages (ROMM) will be jointly organising the 3rd edition of the Golden Jubilee Wedding Celebrations on 11 April 2020. The event celebrates long-lasting marriages and honours couples who have been married for 50 years and more. Eligible couples are encouraged to sign up for the Celebrations by contacting msf_rom@msf.gov.sg or 6338 7808. Family members may also nominate eligible couples for the celebration.

Licensed Solemniser Appreciation Event

4 These initiatives were highlighted during an appreciation event that the Registry of Marriages (ROM) held today to acknowledge the contributions of licensed solemnisers and affirm the role that they play in nurturing strong marriages. The event was hosted by Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Senior Parliamentary Secretary (SPS) for Social and Family Development and was attended by some 400 licensed solemnisers.
